Wayfinding
This is the way
For those unfamiliar with our story, a little back story may be in order.
Veronica and I got married at 33 years old and quickly had a family of four. We had two full-time jobs and not a lot of time together.
Fast forward ten years and we were retired from both of our jobs and living on passive income.
This was after starting out with a net worth pretty close to zero, although we didn’t even know how to calculate net worth at that time.
Two professional careers and some college degrees and we hadn’t accumulated much. We decided to keep my bachelor pad as a rental and the rest is history.
Turns out rentals were fun for us. We dragged the kids around with us to show houses and check on rehabs. Our goal was ten houses in the following twenty years to supplement retirement.
Well we had so much fun that we ended up retiring Veronica about six years ago and myself about a year and a half ago.
Regrets? NOPE! While we miss our colleagues and the cultures of our jobs, we don’t miss the time away from family. We are sharing this newsletter to help others contemplate what they might like to implement from our experiences and what they absolutely don’t want to do.
I hope that even for those who LOVE what they do, this might give you some ideas to secure your financial future and reduce your financial stress.
I LOVED my job for about 15 years; even while building our rental portfolio. When the job changed from LOVE to “tolerate”, I was glad we had started building something that gave us options.
My position changed due to promotions and I changed as a person. It’s hard to know what will be important to us in the future - at a different stage of life.
So today, with rentals supporting our lifestyle and adventures fueling our souls, we want to share the good, the bad and the ugly of this process.
We didn’t know where we were headed so we were sketching the map as we bushwhacked our way ahead.
We hope this might help you draw a map that you can use to get to a destination you can just barely imagine.
I hope you draw it in pencil because you will be making changes along the way. Revisit it often and see if it’s still taking you where YOU want to go. And we hope that that place is perfect for you.
We are still drawing our map with pencil as we contemplate our next goal.
Our map isn’t good for anyone else. You have to draw your own but we hope we can help.
